Johann Baptist Vanhal was one of Haydn’s most important contemporaries. His symphonies in particular were widely admired throughout Europe, with music historian Dr. Charles Burney reporting that Vanhal’s symphonies were known in England before those of Haydn. The finely wrought works in this recording include the Symphony in F minor, considered one of his best in this genre, and the Symphony in C which was highly popular in its day. All of these works illustrate Vanhal’s sophisticated mastery of musical structure, imaginative handling of the orchestra, and a profusion of memorable themes.

“.. Throughout, the playing of the Czech Chamber PO under Michael Halász is polished but might have benefited from a touch of greater fire. No matter, there’s plenty here that is thoroughly worthwhile, and the sound is eminently truthful. Indeed the whole disc sheds further fascinating light on musical trends in Vienna during the second half of the 18th century…”

“… Michael Halasz has included three symphonies and an oboe concerto on the program. He brings out more in his interpretations than just gripping melodies and stirring rhythms… it’s very good that Halasz differentiates the music well, achieving nuanced sensitive playing that elevates the music beyond the superficial brilliance sometimes attributed to it.” ****
